THE RABBIT AND THE SNOWMAN is a wonderful book about the value of friendship while also learning about the seasonal year. The story and illustrations match as the story develops.
Basically this is a story about a snowman who after he is constructed and built is lonesome, since the children do not come back to visit him. As he is wondering if he did something wrong to offend the children, he makes friends with a rabbit and they enjoy talking together. Then as the season warms up, the snowman disappears leaving the rabbit to wonder if he had done something to offend the snowman. The seasons change and the rabbit is busy with his other acquaintances, but is glad the next year when the snowman is rebuilt and returns to the friendship with the rabbit.
The illustrations are fantastic. It is difficult to change the fixed look of a snowman to change an emotion, but when the snowman is doubting himself, the picture actually matches with the storyline. This book could easily be used for a beginning reader since the pictures are so wonderfully done, match the story perfectly.
Some vocabulary words need to be taught before reading this story which I recommend for preschool through age eight such as patiently, crunchy, trickled, and wondered.
